Patchwork Kitchen Backsplash in Virginia-Highland
This kitchen backsplash in Virginia-Highland used a patchwork-style tile collection where each 4x4 square has a different pattern, but all tiles share a common color palette of warm earth tones and soft blues. The effect is eclectic but cohesive, which suited the character of the Virginia-Highland home well. The backsplash runs from the countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets, with a full-height section behind the range.
Patchwork tile requires more attention to layout than a single-pattern tile because the random arrangement of patterns needs to look intentional rather than haphazard. We pre-laid the tile on the floor before mounting, arranging the patterns so no two identical tiles were adjacent and the color distribution was even across the full backsplash area. This pre-layout step adds time but prevents the need to rearrange tiles after they're set.
The wall behind the range received a heat-resistant adhesive rather than standard mastic, since the area directly behind a gas range can reach temperatures that degrade standard adhesives over time. The countertop joint was finished with a flexible caulk in a matching color to allow for the independent movement between the stone countertop and the tile wall. This project is in a Virginia-Highland home on a side street off N. Highland Ave.
