Grey Stone Bathroom Remodel in Virginia-Highland

Modern bathroom with dark grey stone-look wall tiles, towel warmer, and built-in bathtub in a Virginia-Highland home renovation

This bathroom renovation in Virginia-Highland involved full tile removal and replacement in a bathroom that had been updated in the 1990s with dated pink ceramic. The homeowner wanted a contemporary look using dark grey stone-look porcelain on the walls, paired with a built-in bathtub and a heated towel rail. We stripped the walls to the studs, installed cement backer board, and applied waterproofing before any new tile went up.

The grey stone-look tile has a textured surface that mimics natural slate, which reads as a different material than the smooth large-format tile used on the lower portion of the walls. The two tile types meet at a horizontal band, which required careful planning to land the transition at a height that works visually with the tub and the towel rail mounting height. We used a matching grey grout throughout to minimize the visual interruption of the grout lines.

The existing plumbing in this Virginia-Highland home had been partially updated but still had original cast-iron drain lines, which we worked around during the floor tile portion of the project. The floor tile is a large-format grey porcelain that coordinates with the wall tile without being identical.
