Sage Herringbone Shower in Virginia-Highland
This shower was part of a bathroom renovation in a Virginia-Highland bungalow. The homeowner wanted a herringbone pattern in a sage green subway tile, installed floor-to-ceiling in the shower area. The existing shower had a concrete board substrate in reasonable condition, which we inspected and reinforced at the corners before applying a new waterproofing membrane over the entire wet area.
Herringbone patterns require a different layout approach than a standard running bond. We establish a true vertical center line and work outward in both directions, which means the cuts at the perimeter are mirror images of each other. The 45-degree angle of the herringbone also means every cut is on a diagonal, which takes more time on the wet saw but produces a cleaner result than scoring and snapping.
The tile is a 3x12 ceramic subway tile in sage green with a matte finish, set with a medium grey grout that provides enough contrast to read the herringbone pattern clearly. The shower niche was tiled to match, with the herringbone pattern continuing through it rather than using a different tile at the niche face. This project is in Virginia-Highland, near the N. Highland Avenue commercial corridor.
