Calacatta Walk-In Shower in Poncey-Highland

Stunning Calacatta marble large-format tile walk-in shower with hexagon mosaic floor and niche in a Poncey-Highland home

This walk-in shower was part of a bathroom renovation in a Poncey-Highland Craftsman bungalow. The homeowner wanted a clean, spa-like shower using large-format Calacatta marble porcelain tile on the walls, with a contrasting hexagon mosaic floor. The existing shower had been tiled over twice previously, and the substrate behind the tile was compromised from years of water intrusion without a proper waterproofing membrane.

We removed all existing tile down to the studs, installed cement backer board on the walls, and applied a full liquid-applied waterproofing membrane before any new tile went up. The wall tile is 24x48 inch large-format porcelain, which required back-buttering and medium-bed mortar to ensure full coverage without hollow spots. The niche was framed, waterproofed, and tiled to match the wall before the surrounding tile was set.

The hexagon mosaic floor is sheet-mounted 2-inch marble mosaic, set with a slight slope toward the center drain. The transition between the large-format wall tile and the mosaic floor uses a polished Schluter profile for a clean edge. This project is in a Poncey-Highland home near the Ponce de Leon corridor.
