Marble-Look Walk-In Shower in Old Fourth Ward
This walk-in shower was installed in a new construction townhome in Old Fourth Ward, one of several units in a development near the BeltLine. The developer specified large-format marble-look porcelain tile on the walls with a matte black shower system, and we coordinated with the plumber and general contractor to ensure the tile layout worked with the fixture rough-in locations before walls were closed.
New construction has different considerations than renovation work. The substrate was already prepared with cement board, but we still applied a full liquid waterproofing membrane before tile went up, since the cement board itself is not waterproof. The niche was framed and waterproofed separately. The large-format wall tile, 24x48 inch porcelain, required back-buttering and lippage control clips to produce a flat surface across the shower walls.
The floor tile is a small-format marble mosaic, which provides adequate traction in a wet shower floor and allows the floor to slope toward the linear drain without creating visible lippage. The transition between the mosaic floor and the large-format wall tile uses a polished metal schluter strip. This project is in Old Fourth Ward, within walking distance of the Eastside Trail section of the BeltLine.
