Grey Kitchen Marble Backsplash in Old Fourth Ward
This kitchen backsplash was part of a full kitchen renovation in an Old Fourth Ward home that had been a rental property before the current owners purchased it. The kitchen was gutted and rebuilt with grey shaker cabinets, quartz countertops, and new appliances. The backsplash tile was the last element installed, after the countertops were set and the appliances were in place.
The marble-look tile is a 3x12 format with a soft grey veining pattern, installed in a running bond with the long dimension horizontal. Working around an already-installed range and refrigerator required careful measurement and precise cuts. The range hood mounting plate required a notched cut on both sides where the tile meets the mounting bracket, which is done with a wet saw and a small angle grinder for the inside corner.
The quartz countertop in this kitchen has a polished edge profile, and the tile was set to land just above the countertop surface rather than behind it, which creates a clean visible joint that was finished with a flexible white caulk. This is a common detail in renovated kitchens in Old Fourth Ward, where the countertop and backsplash are often installed by different trades in sequence.
